Business case training

Learn what makes a business case that cuts through, convinces and gets funded. This interactive session covers the fundamentals of business case development, taught by a former senior Department of Treasury and Finance adviser who co-authored the methods government uses to judge a case.

What you learn

The course builds the skills to develop clear, evidence-based arguments about the problem an investment solves and the benefits it delivers. It covers how to weigh response and project options, shape a sound solution, and build a road map for delivery. Participants leave able to apply the thinking to their own work.

How it runs

The session is hands-on. Participants work through practical exercises to build the skills, not just hear about them. Where possible we build the case studies from the participating organisation's own material, so the learning is close to the real work; where that is not practical, we supply generic case studies drawn from across Australia. The course usually runs in-house as an awareness session that supports just-in-time learning and the business cases a team will develop next.

Building the Business Case, with IPAA and DTF

IPAA Victoria and the Department of Treasury and Finance present the Building the Business Case course, and Ideas Advisory delivers it. The course uses real examples to teach the principles of good business case development, from experienced business case writers and reviewers. It is the same thinking as our in-house session, delivered through IPAA's program.
